NYSSCPA Journalism Contest Winners

A journalist’s role is more important than ever with the country in economic crisis. Journalists have asked questions—how did we get here and who should we hold accountable? What will pull us out? They’ve championed consumers facing powerful corporations and affected legislative reform. They’ve searched, interviewed, pried and exposed.

In recognition of their efforts, the NYSSCPA offers an annual award. The Society announced the results of its Excellence in Financial Journalism contest this month and will honor winners with a luncheon in May. Journalists are judged on accuracy, thoroughness, fairness and ability to communicate.

Proposed Rules Would Force Tax CPAs to Register with IRS and Pay Fee

The IRS is proposing to make CPA tax practitioners re-register their preparer tax identification numbers (PTINS) and pay a registration fee, as part of its effort to better regulate the tax preparation industry, according to agency spokespersonal Dianne M. Besunder.

Nearly 30 Wall Street Bankers Accused in Bid-Rig Conspiracy Suit

Nearly 30 bankers from more than a dozen Wall Street firms, including big names like JP Morgan Chase, UBS and Lehman Brothers, have been named as co-conspirators in an already ongoing criminal antitrust case involving bid rigging and price fixing in the municipal derivatives market. The names of the banks had previously been hidden from the public but were inadvertently included in a court filing on March 24.

CBO Predicts Social Security Deficit in 2010

Data from the U.S. Congressional Budget Office predicts that 2010 will be the first year that the Social Security payouts will begin to exceed revenues, something that was not expected to happen until 2016. However, says the New York Times, this timetable has been accelerated due to the crash in the real estate market and the consequent economic downturn.
