‘Jersey Shore’ Cast Angered by New Tanning Tax
The IRS has issued regulations for the administration of the 10 percent excise tax on indoor tanning services that will go into effect July 1. Starting in July, cosmetic tanning salons will collect the tax from clients using their services and then pay that to the government quarterly, with IRS Form 720.
Whilst some tanners may feel burnt by the tax, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of the popular reality TV show "Jersey Shore"—known for her bright, orangey glow—took the news particularly hard. She told the Wall Street Journal that she doesn’t “go tanning anymore because Obama put a 10 percent tax on tanning. And I feel like he did that intentionally for us.” Polizzi said she has switched to spray tans to maintain her trademark hue.
Phototherapy services performed in licensed medical offices and tanning services in fitness facilities that are not separately billed from facility fees are exempt from the tax.
