UPDATE: State Tax Discontinues 1099-G Mailings

Submitted by Colleen Lutolf on Tue, 01/26/2010 - 18:06

This is usually the time of year when New York state taxpayers begin to find their 1099-Gs in the mailbox. They may not think of them until they receive them -- a little postcard identifying how much of a New York state tax refund they received last year.

This year, taxpayers may not think of them at all, since the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance announced it's not going to send them. Anyone who wants their 1099-G now has to go to the state tax department's Web site, fill out an online form and print it out. Watch out though, some people are reporting that when they try to print out the form, their Internet crashes. UPDATE: The State Tax Department has attempted to fix the technical glitches associated with 1099-G retrieval, according to the below comment.

1099G Additional

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 02/25/2010 - 21:12.

I find it very curious that our refunds are less by the exact amount of what the 1099G form would be and the NYS website to view these 1099G forms is consistently down. That is probably why they are not sending them. This state has enough money- NYS Lotto and the NYS Thruway don't bring in enough revenue? Where does our money go?

So frustrating...

A Response from NYS Tax Department

Submitted by Brad Maione (not verified) on Fri, 02/05/2010 - 14:33.

We appreciate Colleen Lutolf's January 26 post on cpa.blog announcing that you can get Form 1099-G online at www.nystax.gov. I'd like to remind your members that taxpayers and tax professionals can also get Form 1099-G information by calling us at (518) 485-0799. (In-state callers without free long distance should call 1 866 698-2946.)

If I could, I'd like to respond to the last sentence in Colleen's post. Shortly after implementing this service, we learned that some people couldn't view or print Form 1099-G because they didn't have the right version of Adobe Reader installed on their computer. We immediately added a link to our Form 1099-G web page, allowing them to download the latest Adobe Reader version for free.

The Tax Department will continue to proactively monitor this online service and troubleshoot problems. We invite your members to provide feedback about their experience through our web survey. They can access the survey through the Form 1099-G online service.

Isn’t this stupid, the idea

Submitted by CharlieJay (not verified) on Sat, 01/30/2010 - 01:27.

Isn’t this stupid, the idea of issuing a 1099g is to make sure refunds are reported. Now taxpayers will put any or no amount and cause mismatch letters.

And how can a payer just decide not to send a required form??

I went to the site to get my

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sun, 02/07/2010 - 01:51.

I went to the site to get my NYS 1099G and the site said, "Our records indicate that you have no 1099-G amount to report for 2009 filing purposes." How do they know this? I itemized on my federal return last year and do indeed need to report this amount. I wonder what would happen if I leave it off my federal return. Thanks NYS Dept of Tax. Between this and the "use tax" (even after you make internet stores like Amazon charge sales tax) I think you are really amongst the worst government agencies in the country.
